Of course it was just a matter of time (though The Terminator 2: Judgment Day was released in 1991) until this app would be developed. Sounds very early stage, and hopefully the rabbit is ok (read on). I really think it would be easier to work it out first with eyeglasses…..

Imagine catching up with your texts, social networking and perhaps the news without having to log on to a computer or even glance at a smartphone.

Messages and images would simply appear in front of your eyes, generated by a computerised contact lens.

Of course, you may not always want to be bothered by such messages if you are doing anything so quaint as – for instance – reading a book or going out walking and enjoying the scenery.

But until now the concept of info-vision – the ability to stream information across a person’s field of vision – had belonged to the realms of science fiction, featuring in films such as the Terminator series or TV shows such as Torchwood.

However, scientists have developed a prototype lens that could one day provide the wearer with all kinds of hands-free information.

It could also be used to display directions and TV programmes.

The lenses, which would be inserted and removed like normal contacts, could also be handy if you are indeed enjoying the great outdoors, allowing you to zoom in on distant views.

While the amount of information that could appear in front of our faces is tantalising, the researchers insist all the components are tiny and the normal field of vision will not be obstructed.

The super-lenses are the brainchild of Professor Babak Parviz, a contact lens-wearing engineer who specialises in making parts on the nanoscale, thousands of times thinner than a human hair.

So far, he has created a lens which is implanted with tiny components, including a single LED light, an antenna that picks up power and information through a wireless connection, and an electronic circuit.

The lens was placed into a rabbit’s eye without causing any problems to its health and the light came on.

Professor Parviz, of the University of Washington in Seattle, said: ‘We have got a rudimentary display with one dot. If you had several dots, you could maybe create arrows, to give people directions.’

The professor envisions that one day we will be able to stream all the information we need directly on to the contact lens.

He is also investigating the idea of incorporating sensors that will pick up blood sugar levels and other potentially important medical information.

He told the Mail: ‘The surface of the eye is covered in live cells and the body has to keep them alive, so they are in direct contact with the bloodstream.’

If you are not the kind of person who’s willing to spend hours on Etsy to find the perfect vintage frame without trying them on, then I suggest you drop by Harry Toulch on Saint-Laurent street in Montreal. They have an amazing selection of vintage frame and great brands, such as Oliver Peoples, Ray-Ban, Paul Smith and more.

Harry Toulch is kind of a big deal. They’ve been sitting on that corner since 1958 and the original Harry invented the world’s first color-interchangeable frame system, which was patented in 2004. Now I believe it’s run by his son, Michel Toulch. I’m currently debating if I should change my red glasses for black cat-eye!

Sunglasses this summer are oversized, colorful, and glitzy, with plenty of style to make a big splash when you head out into the sun.

This summer, those in the know say that women will sport oversized, colorful plastic sunglasses.

“I don’t think anything can be too big this year,” agrees Jean Scott, vice president of product development for the Luxottica group, a sunglass designer and manufacturer headquartered in Milan, Italy.

You’ll also see, “more crystals, more bling, more glitz, and a plethora of fabulous colors,” she says. “This is probably the most colorful year I have ever seen,” she says.

Even better, you don’t have to sacrifice style for safety when you choose your new summer sunglasses. “The bigger the frame, the better the

protection. Some years, that doesn’t work because such glasses aren’t as stylish,” says Paul Dougherty, MD, medical director of Dougherty Laser Vision and a clinical instructor at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at the University of Los Angeles in California.

Go for Sunglasses with Style – and UV Protection

But trends aside, “The most important aspect is choosing sunglasses with 100% ultraviolet (UV) protection that blocks up to 400 nanometers,” Dougherty says. “This is maximum protection and that’s what you want,” he says.

“There may be a sticker on the lens or frame, but not always so you may have to ask the salesperson,” Dougherty adds.

And you don’t have to spend as much as Jessica or Brad to get the same look. “There isn’t a direct relationship between price and protection,” he says, “You can get a $10 pair of sunglasses with 100% UV protection or a $1,000 pair,” he says.

Another buzzword in the sunglass community is polarized. But don’t be fooled or talked out of your hard-earned money. “Polarized doesn’t mean it blocks UV rays. It just cuts down on glare, which is important from a comfort standpoint only,” Dougherty says.

Sunglass lenses will come in all colors this year, from brown, amber, and copper to green, gray, rose, and blue. “Choose whichever looks best, as there is no relationship between color and UV protection,” Dougherty says.

In fact, “dark lenses with no UV protection are worse for the eye than light lenses with UV protection because the dark color allows pupils to dilate and be more susceptible to UV damage,” he says. UV protection is actually just a special coating put on lenses regardless of whether they are pink, blue, or green.

However, for the millions of Americans who have undergone laser eye surgery, lighter lenses are the way to go. “Choose amber, green, brown, blue, or yellow because your pupils won’t dilate and your vision will be better as a result,” he says. Consider the gold-rimmed aviator-style sunglasses with green lenses, which experts predict will have a second coming this summer.

Many sunglasses come as wraparounds meaning that they don’t just stop at the temple. Instead, they curve around toward the ear with either a wide frame or a lens. “This blocks reflected UV light and gives additional protection for your eyes,” Dougherty says.

Plus it gives you more room for design. “Sides of frames are embellished with crystals this year so that your glasses can become a conversation piece,” says Rene Soltis, a Whitehall, Penn.-based optician and spokesperson for the Vision Council of America.

Shopping News: Oliver Peoples pays tribute to optometrist Harry Toulch

The late Harry Toulch liked to joke that he always wanted to make a spectacle of himself. Now, a year after the popular optometrist’s death, L.A. brand Oliver Peoples has done just that.

The Toulch frame is a hybrid wire-plastic design that’s a little retro and a little modern, said Harry’s son Michael, also an optometrist who now runs the family business. It is slightly masculine but because of the trend to heavy nerdy glasses, women try them, too.

The homage came about because his father was one of the first retailers anywhere to carry the cool brand when it started out in 1986, Michael said. “It’s been a long-standing relationship,’’ he said.

They wanted to do something after they learned of his death, in October 2010, Michael explained, and he figured they would send flowers.

“All of us were seriously stunned. All of the staff were in tears,’’ he said.

Harry Toulch set up shop on St. Laurent Blvd. in 1958, adding a location on Greene Ave. in 1993.

A lover of frames, he saved favourite pieces from the 1980s and ’90s. The shops now boast a substantial vintage collection, some of which are sold at American Apparel shops, others at Harry Toulch Vision.

“We dusted them off and put them out. The 18- to 30-year-olds are gobbling them up,’’ Michael said.

The vintage frames go for $125. The Oliver Peoples Toulch frame is $400. It is available in Montreal now; its full release is not until 2012.
